What is myofascial release?
Myofascial Release is a form of hands-on therapy used to relieve pain and to relax muscles and tissue. "Myo" refers to the muscle, and "fascial" refers to the smooth tough tissue that covers all muscles.
The fascia is a layer of fibrous tissue that permeates the human body and interpenetrates and surrounds muscles, bones, organs, nerves, blood vessels and other structures. Fascia is an uninterrupted, three-dimensional web of tissue that extends from head to toe, from front to back, from interior to exterior. Myofascial therapy combines several techniques with the common objective is to release the superficial, intermediate and deep fascias.
This approach helps people to identify and release tension in the body. The practitioner uses manipulation to physically ease out tension with their hands. This may also bring about a psychological release of pain or tension. The session involves manual manipulation of the muscle and fascial tissue focusing on areas where there are problems in the body.
The fascial system is adaptive and changes in response to the demands of physical activities, postures, emotions, trauma and stresses we place upon it. As the structural integrity of the fascial system changes due to the stress placed upon it, so to does its functional capacity leading to adhesion and pain.
The treatment takes about 45mins to an hour and is both relaxing and releasing. The treatment can help with back pain, muscle tension, sleeping difficulties, disturbed eating habits, fatigue, digestive problems, stress and depression.
